Bret is a political scientist with a focus on international relations and peace & conflict studies. He is a member of the Conflicts.Meanings.Transitions research network at the University of Bayreuth

Bret’s research addresses how political actors interpret their roles in histories of injustice and engage their consequences through projects of accountability, denial and resistance.  His thesis on "White Reckonings" was co-named most outstanding doctoral dissertation at The Fletcher School in 2021, having accompanied anti-racist white activists as they endeavored and struggled to take greater responsibility for transforming the structures that perpetuate racialized violence and inequality in the United States and across the globe.

In Conflicts.Meanings.Transitions he examines the entangled corporate responsibilities of arms manufacturers in histories of (post)colonial injustice. Tracing key public debates on the private manufacture and sale of arms in Great Britain and Germany across the past century, his work aims to historicize this idea of (not) holding arms companies morally and legally responsible for (post)colonial manifestations of violence.

After studying International Relations at The Fletcher School at Tufts University in the United States, Bret was most recently a recipient of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation Postdoctoral Stipend at the Willy Brandt School, University of Erfurt, before joining the University of Bayreuth in December 2022.
