Joschka Philipps is a Junior Research Group Leader at the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, and interim professor in the fall term 2024/25 for the Sociology of Africa chair at the University of Bayreuth. His work focuses on youth, urban protests, conflict, uncertainty and rumours through the lens of interdisciplinary approaches, postcolonial theoretical debates, and transcontinental collaborations. His Junior Research Group “Politics of the Unknown. Conspiracism and conflict” combines photographic and other artistic approaches with social science methods to describe and analyse how information circulates in different contexts of emergency and conflict in West Africa and beyond. He also co-directs the project “Fluid Ontologies of Contestation” which addresses the role of social media in political protests in Burkina Faso and connects quantitative data scientific methods with qualitative social science approaches.
Joschka holds a PhD in Sociology from the Centre for African Studies in Basel, and an MA in Political Science from the University of Freiburg i.Br., Germany. Prior to coming to Bayreuth, he has worked as a senior researcher at the University of Basel and with the Swiss Peace Foundation (swisspeace). He has done extensive field research in Guinea, Uganda, and Burkina Faso, and has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Les Afriques dans le Monde (Sciences Po Bordeaux) and as a doctoral researcher at Columbia University (New York, USA), and at the Nordic Africa Institute (Uppsala, Sweden). He has taught at the University of N’Zérékoré, Guinea and at the Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
